Hartig Drug Company Announces Closure of Central Avenue Location in Dubuque, Iowa

Dubuque, Iowa – Hartig Drug Company (“Hartig Drug”) regrets to announce the upcoming closure of its Central Avenue location in Dubuque, Iowa, a decision made after careful consideration of the challenges facing community pharmacies today. The Central Avenue store will permanently close on December 13, 2024, and Hartig Drug is working closely with employees, patients, and community partners to ensure a smooth transition.

In recent years, Hartig Drug, like many independent pharmacies across the nation, have faced declining insurance reimbursements from large pharmacy benefit managers; specifically, Cigna/Express Scripts, CVS/Caremark and United Health/OptumRx. Coupled with rising operating costs and pharmacists and employee shortages, these trends have placed increased financial strain on pharmacies. Studies have noted that five independently owned pharmacies have closed every day in 2024.

“Serving our patients for over 100 years on Central Avenue has been an honor, and we are deeply grateful for the community’s trust and loyalty,” said Charlie Hartig, CEO and Owner of Hartig Drug. “Our priority during this transition is to ensure continuity of care for our patients and to assist our staff through this difficult process. We look forward to continuing to serve all of our Dubuque patients at our three convenient locations in Dubuque.”

All patient records and prescription services will be seamlessly transferred to Hartig Drug location at Asbury Square. Patients with questions or concerns regarding their prescriptions are encouraged to reach out to our Central Avenue staff or visit us.

Hartig Drug remains committed to serving the broader Dubuque community and will continue to focus on providing high-quality, accessible healthcare at its other Dubuque locations.
